As a loyal, albeit somewhat naïve companion, Hastings is to Poirot what Watson is to Sherlock Holmes. Hastings marries and has four children – two sons and two daughters. Poirot regards Hastings as a poor private detective, not particularly intelligent, yet helpful in his way of being fooled by the criminal or seeing things the way the average man would see them and for his tendency to unknowingly "stumble" onto the truth. He becomes Poirot's lifelong friend and appears in many cases. Hastings, a former British Army officer, first meets Poirot during Poirot's years as a police officer in Belgium and almost immediately after they both arrive in England.

His lack ofcommon sense compliments Poirot’s precision perfectly, and their friendship is a highlight for Christie fans.Ĭaptain Hastings features in 8 Poirot novels, 21 short stories and 1 play. Hercule Poirot’s first, and most famous sidekick, Captain Hastings is a lifelong friend, confidant, chronicler and room mate throughout their lives.
